[English Statement]
-Phangutic- is a neologism combining "phan," a prefix signifying appearance, with "GUTIC," the concept proposed by artist Toshiaki Yamaoka. Sharing the same etymological root as "phenomenon," it could be translated as "Phenomenal-GUTIC." Or perhaps, referencing "phantom" or "fantasy," it might be rendered as "Phantasmal-GUTIC."
GUTIC refers to primordial, undifferentiated forms that do not exist in reality. They are concrete yet abstract, while belonging to neither category entirely.
The forms that have emerged through Yamaoka’s hands possess a solid reality that cannot be dismissed simply as products of delusion. As you gaze at them, they begin to resemble human faces, organs, plants, or species of microorganisms.
While Yamaoka has often composed his exhibitions as single, self-contained shows in the past, this time he attempts an exhibition with a strong improvisational nature, interweaving painting, photography, and video. By doing so, we may be able to close in on "GUTIC as a phenomenon"—the moment when a one-of-a-kind form emerges from the act of repetitive drawing. Furthermore, "Phantom GUTIC" works—pieces that were never presented because they did not fit the themes of previous exhibitions—will be unveiled for the first time. Another layer of the mysterious whole of GUTIC is sure to be revealed.
